Position Summary

The St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital, Risk and Quality team is seeking expressions of interest from current employees for the following role –

  • Patient Safety Officer
  • Full-time, Fixed-term (6 months) 

The position reports to the Quality Manager and is responsible for and is responsible for enhancing the quality of care provided to patients across the hospital.  

 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide leadership and support to clinical department managers to implement qualitand risk management systems and improve patient safety outcomes;

  •

  • Provide leadership and support to department managers in incident and complaint investigation and coordinate actions to prevent recurrence;
  • Support/ facilitate the implementation of innovation and systems improvement that eliminate/reduce patient harm;
  • Work collaboratively with other clinicians to facilitate process improvement strategies that support patient safety and the achievement of patient safety goals;
  • Collect and analyse patient safety and clinical outcome data to evidence the effectiveness of the patient safety system;
  • Evaluate patient safety and outcome data to identify opportunities for continual improvement and make recommendation to relevant hospital committees;
  • Support the Quality Manager to improve the effectiveness of the quality system and monitor compliance with policies, the implementation of corrective and preventive actions and survey recommendations;the implementation of recommendations arising from root cause analysis or other reviews;

  • Work in collaboration with the Quality Manager and Hospital Executive to coordinate 
  • Monitor literature and professional organisations for new or revised best practice related to patient safety;

  • Continuously evaluate and improve the hospital’s patient safety program based on internal needs and external requirements and standards;
  • Provide input into the budget process for expenses related to patient safety;
  • Provide education / training related to patient safety, incident investigation and management and the use of Riskman as required;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

To perform the duties of this role you will have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in health service delivery with appropriate clinical knowledge, experience and skills is essential including a basic understanding of care processes provided in multiple areas of the hospital;
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline;
  • Experience in health care accreditation and regulatory requirements as well as knowledge and an understanding of UnitingCare Health’s Quality Improvement model/program;
  • Demonstrated experience in quality improvement initiatives and their practical application in the achievement of customer service/ delivery needs;
  • Knowledge of risk management principles and issues regarding patient safety;
  • Demonstrated experience in advanced analytical skills to trend and interpret data and provide reports on data / information used for projects, evaluation and process improvement activities;
  • Developed analytical, conceptual and problem solving skill;
  • Demonstrated experience in developing working relationships to achieved identified outcomes and an ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Demonstrated communication, consultation, facilitation and negotiation skills including report writing and presentation skills, including experience in the use of computer software (eg Word, Excel, Powerpoint);
  • Ability to effectively lead and implement change in a complex environment.
